On eBird, Horicon NWR has nearly 300 species observed, more than 18,000 checklists, and 13 hotspots. On the drive back to Chicago, I made a brief stop at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center , a 185-acre preserve on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, that is well worth a visit. There is an auto tour route with several trails along the route.

What do you say when someone tells you they will be spending the summer in the Lower Michigan Peninsula? Recently it has also been documented as breeding in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Upper Michigan Peninsula, but those birds are few and not always accessible. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list.

Fourth, not seeing a Kirtland’s Warbler in Central Park would mean that eventually I would have to make a trip to Michigan, the only place where they breed in any numbers, just to see a Kirtland’s Warbler some day. It’s hard to think of a species I would rather see in New York State.

The potholes and associated grasslands create North America’s most productive habitat for breeding waterfowl, making it an area of global significance for Mallards , Northern Pintails , Blue-winged Teals , Gadwalls , Northern Shovelers , and others. But taken as a whole, WPAs total almost 3.8 million acres.

I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. To finally connect with the species and to do so in such subtle light and with two very confiding individuals makes them my Best Bird of the Year! It was a mythical bird I didn’t ever expect to see. Thainamu chose a snipe !

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.
