The main wintering area for Ross’s Goose ( Chen rossii ) is presently in the Central Valley of California, though increasing numbers winter in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, and the north-central highlands of Mexico 1. The Ross’s Goose is the smallest variety of the white geese that breed in North America.

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), contain many of the nation’s most renowned birding locations, including Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico, Laguna Atascosa NWR in Texas, and J.N. WPAs provide critical breeding, resting, and nesting habitat for millions of ducks, geese, and swans, as well as shorebirds and grassland birds.

The Colima Warbler has a distinction shared with no other species in the world: It is fully migratory, but both its summer reproductive range and its winter range are almost entirely within Mexico. (A A few breed in Texas’ Big Bend area.) All of our other migratory species either breed mostly in the U.S.

At any rate, the inclusion of these species, which are seen in Mexico and Central America, does make this a ‘North American’ field guide in the true ‘North American’ definition of the geographic term. Large and colorful, they include Mexico, Central America and sometimes South America, showing the full migration route.

You find them in the south from Florida to Texas and down into Mexico, occasionally as far north as the Carolinas in the east and up the Mississippi River as far north as Illinois. It is one of several species in the Mallard -complex of ducks, along with American Black Duck , Mexican Duck , and quite a few others.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Further, the crane take in Mexico is a free-for-all: neither regulated nor recorded. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly. Lots to think about.
