They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. Telomeres are repetitive sequences of genetic material sitting at the ends of genes.

A few dead birds were collected by authorities and sent to a laboratory for investigation. and species breeding in cavities are less affected.

I noticed a silhouette and we investigated and we got our first Pallid Cuckoo for the year. We discovered another juvenile not far away, so other species have had their eggs swapped out. There is very little information on this species of bird and it is believed that there are only 1500 in Australia.

When I finally got around to investigating Bass Rock the week before our trip, I realized why it was at the top of the lists. Birders flock to this haven, as it is a sanctuary for over 150,000 breeding Northern Gannets , making it the world’s largest colony. On a single day, more than 5,000 dead birds were counted.

While Napos relative remoteness made it seem less vulnerable to covid, on the second day of our hotel stay we were informed that they could no longer service the hotel rooms as all the hotel service staff had contracted the virus. Why the Latin species name is cyaniventer (meaning having a dark blue belly) remains a mystery to me though.

Drakensberg (or Orange-breasted) Rockjumper is a Drakensberg Mountain species whose range is shared with the tiny landlocked kingdom of Lesotho. The Siberian Rubythroat seems to somewhat lack a proper inbuilt GPS system – while it breeds as far west as the Ural Mountains and winters as far est as Central India, it does not migrate through central Asia in large numbers (even though this would be the shortest way).
