Seabirds that breed in the Galapagos aren’t exactly in our waters all of the time but at the moment, it does seem like Costa Rica has become a popular destination for the shearwaters. As the ferry plodded along, small groups of shearwaters lifted off the water to flutter and glide just above the surface.

This time it’s a group of Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus that have just arrived from the south. Griffon Vultures have a long breeding season. Isn’t it a bit late to breed? Why bother with such a risky journey if you aren’t going to breed? With luck, they might be rescued but others drown. They have to get out.

It turned out that, believe it or not, the eagle had been banded on August 21, 1987 – 25 years to the day before his rescue. A group gathered to send him off, including PA Game Commission’s Tracy Graziano, who took a beautiful video of the event, which I urge you to watch.
