Birding Lake Kerkini, Greece: Three Lazy Days

Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. However, during a storm the chains that kept it anchored broke off and the raft is now stranded on the shore, accessible to stray dogs and not used for breeding.

We stop by one especially unruly nest with half a dozen round nests of Spanish Sparrows below – two are chatting on a wire right now – while at the first floor, inside the nest construction, the House Sparrows live; and, at the top floor, the White Storks are clapping their bills. Dalmatian Pelicans – nesting platform.

A Bird Presentation in Shanghai

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. The Olive-backed Pipit is a small songbird that in Shanghai can only be seen in winter – in summer, it breeds further north. Hopefully, this will not change in the future.

But I have been sick with different kinds and forms of cold since the beginning of December with no interruption, and so has my entire family. Species that were apparently less affected were Corvids, pigeons/doves, the Paridae, sparrows, warblers, and Black Redstarts. Okay, I meant to write an entertaining post. I honestly did.
