I did often wonder while reading the book whether the result equaled the effort. The late Victorian age was not a good time to be an egret!

Steve, another member of our birding group, also had a field guide by Kenefick, Restall, and Hayes, but his was bordered in GREEN, had a slightly different title, and, to my extreme chagrin, was much more recent, showing the recently split Trinidad Motmot instead of the Blue-crowned Motmot on my book’s cover. I was confused.

That was the fourth edition, dated 1980, and I didn’t realize at the time that we were getting the books for free because the fifth edition had just been published. (I Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before!

Our Herring Gull is only one species. Bird books are rampant with this stuff. We deserve a better brand of bird songs. There’s no doubt about it, we North American birders have it easy. Our warblers are impossibly colored. Our chat is big and weird. Willow Flycatcher, not singing fitz-bew. It’s time to break free!

A quick check of the Collins 2 (I think American birders know this book as the “Birds of Europe”, but here, some branding mastermind has interconnected the company’s name and the book title) revealed that we are facing two Siberian Greylag Geese (race rubrirostris ).
