Steve, another member of our birding group, also had a field guide by Kenefick, Restall, and Hayes, but his was bordered in GREEN, had a slightly different title, and, to my extreme chagrin, was much more recent, showing the recently split Trinidad Motmot instead of the Blue-crowned Motmot on my book’s cover. I was confused.

That was the fourth edition, dated 1980, and I didn’t realize at the time that we were getting the books for free because the fifth edition had just been published. (I Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before!

Most of such bird tours are branded “Borneo”, without ever mentioning the name of the country in the name of the tour. In 416 pages, 1800 illustrations and over 775 distribution maps covering regularly occurring species, “Birds of Malaysia” depicts all 847 species recorded in Malaysia and Singapore to date.

The 7th edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America covers 1,023 species that reside, migrate, or have been documented as accidentals or exotics in North America. So, yes, Thayer’s Gull is in the book, but the reader is cautioned that the gull with be lumped with Iceland Gull “in the near future.”

I couldn’t wait to give names to all my new species. I tried using the Internet, but found it frustrating for all the usual reasons; websites either didn’t include all species or were difficult to use for identification. Identifying the birds was easy thanks to the Collins Bird Guide.
