Like so many nomads human and otherwise, the Pine Siskins are pleased to call this valley home base. I’ve always been rather fascinated by trans-Atlantic bird families, perhaps because of growing up with copious mentions of British birds in my children’s books. I was expecting Pine Siskins here. After all, there are pines.

Checklist for Belize lists 622 species in 76 families, of which 104 are rare or accidental and four introduced. Checklist lists 955 species in 86 families, with 152 rare/accidental species, three extirpated species, five introduced species, and nine endemics). Fantasy is the key word here. Doing this work takes time!

I imagine I have a pretty good idea of what this does to the human inhabitants of the area, but what does it do to the birds? I was attempting to photograph some Yellow-headed Blackbirds , resting in the cat-tails, when much to my surprise, this Sora , Porzana carolina , just swam right out, and milled around in from of me.

It’s not like I had forgotten lists created with friends of ‘songs with birds in the lyrics’, my personal favorites being Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird and the Beatles’ Blackbird. It’s relatively easy to classify birds into family groups based on physical characteristics. As they say, the relationship is complicated.

An Ashy Drongo apparently spends approximately 71% of its time scanning (what non-scientists would probably call looking around), 9% eating (less than a typical Chinese human but much more than me), calling 7%, flying 7%, and 6% preening. Another – much rarer – drongo at Nanhui is the Ashy Drongo. These birds have too much taste.

So, why do woodpeckers peck on human made structures? There are several species of birds we enjoy for their songs-- American Robins, Carolina Wrens, Wood Thrushes and maybe even Red-winged Blackbirds. Reason 1: Territory This is the time of year when a variety of birds are setting up breeding territories.

Gray Jay : This drab but charismatic species demonstrates that the more a bird interacts with humans, the more colloquial names it will tend to pick up. Once known as the Canada Jay, but more interestingly by such tags as Camp Robber and Venison Hawk for its habit of hanging around humans and viewing them as a food source.
