New Croton Dam, located just outside of New York City, is an enormous feat of construction. New Croton Dam. Though I was duly impressed by the magnitude of the dam, I was more interested in the sleek black bodies of the cormorants as they fished precariously close to the edge.

Few birds are as spectacular as a Northern Gannet in a plunge dive. I did five one-minute counts of the birds going past and over the point and it averaged 150 birds per minute. I also did an extremely rough count of the birds already in the harbor and came up with roughly 3,000 birds, though I was probably undercounting.

Many state listers immediately chased it even though the bird was very mobile and did not offer good looks for most who tried. However, the true scope of the irruption was not apparent until people started chartering fishing boats to explore the waters just offshore where they were greeted by flocks of hundreds of Razorbills!

I spent a bunch of time this weekend visiting birding spots in far southeastern Queens, along the coast and adjacent to Nassau County. Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird!

When you live in Queens and you only have one morning of an August weekend to go birding there is only one place to go – the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Even a bad day on the East Pond in August is better than a good day at other locations that can be reached from Queens or a morning’s birding. Shorebirds!

I have hope that in the next couple of weeks I will be able to get enough decent shots to share a gallery of birds in transitional plumage and then another of birds in alternate plumage.
