Nicolaas, who can see them back home any day commented that they are the most numerous wading birds in the world (the “most numerous” equaling “the least interesting”). Here comes the angry bird. The footprints lead clearly to the nest site and the birds fly up into the air chasing any potential predators. Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea-Eagles are soon chased off if they fly along the coast in the vicinity of the nest and the Pied Oystercatcher returns to the eggs.

I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Pacific Black Ducks. Most of the birds in the area were well above ground level! Welcome Swallows , Tree Martins and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soared above and we also had Crested Pigeons , which indicated there must be some water present somewhere nearby. The bird-life was quite sparse, but we did add Grey Fantail to the year list. Feral bees.

When we had our camping/birding trip earlier this year we entered Queensland from the Northern Territory at the border near the small outback town of Camooweal. 2013 was a strange year for me, staring in the UK, ending in Borneo and spending large tracks of the year not really seeing many birds in New Zealand.
