Last weekend, I went on a birding binge. I spent two full days where the birding was near constant, and, just to keep the binoculars from being neglected, topped it off with another half day of birding on our drive back from Cano Negro, Costa Rica. Like most of my birding weekends, this one began somewhere in the Central Valley.

It is interesting to note that the vast majority of birds flying by out there are going the other way. The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. This is where an Eastern Imperial Eagle comes for breakfast! In the early 20th century, Imperial Eagles used to live not only in the northern lowlands of Serbia, but also in the southern highland plateaus. Curiously, some eagles were also observed by the Ada Ciganlija Island, within Belgrade – in the breeding season!

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Speckled Warbler by David Cook (CC).

and on our more recent trip to the southern areas of Western Australia we returned to the area to see how different the birding is at this time of year. It was not surprising that we were the only people in the area, but water attracts birds and there was shade from the cliffs and we set up camp. Oriental Plover. Doolena Gorge in June.

I must admit that I was astonished as I had never considered Ghana a potential birding destination, nor knew of any birders who had ever been there. My clients insisted that they wanted to go to Ghana as they had heard that the birding was great. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.

Despite looking way older than his years, we cannot attribute Regannet’s haggard appearance to hard birding, scoring only 19 during eBird’s Big Day was not the greatest effort expended on May 4th.
