This is a bird that flew over 3,400 miles in one flight from Brazil to South Carolina, an amazing bird that is representative of every other Whimbrel. And though the satellite transmitter let Machi be tracked it did not protect it from the hunters’ guns. Machi was, of course, only one bird.

I ran across a couple of Southern Lapwings in Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo, Brazil recently and watched as they indulged in typical Vanellus behaviour. Then I saw the reason for their protective behaviour. Other bird species such as Jacanas and some waterfowl such as the Spur-winged Goose , share the trait of wearing spurs.

I first noticed the bird as it flew up from the ground and into the tree. The wasps concentrated their attack around the bird’s head focusing on the bare skin of the face and around the eye. The bird scraped at its face which must have taken many stings, but eventually most of the wasps gave up and abandoned the nest.

I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. The Taínos named the birds Iguacas, after their call. Spanish settlers arrived in 1493 and called the birds Coterras. The birds thrive.
