Black Bear. It’s the kind of place that helps you get past the human notion that we’re outside of nature—that there’s this divine, glorious thing called nature, and then there’s us, you know, way above it all and in charge. I had developed the arrogant attitude that my existential plight was unique among humans.

According to Wikipedia, these birds are good at multitasking, being “in some parts of its range … known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity” As in humans, “the social implications of dancing [among the cranes] are complex in meaning” ( source ). If everybody did this, the result would be chaos.

The rise in drone popularity over the past few years has been meteoric — and in our typical human arrogance, we’ve once again ignored the fact that for the past 150 million years, the sky has belonged to the birds. It’s quite possible that further research into the internal stress indicators of birds may reveal similar findings.

The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies. ” The Common Green Magpie fortunately does not look common at all.

Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. Like the Rockies, though, this is a harsh beauty, not an ideal climate for the human animal by any means.
