These endearing birds are almost always found in pairs or small family groups, and I often have difficulty deciding which bird to photograph as both males and females are equally beautiful. Once there is sufficient vegetation to support their voracious appetite, they shall be present. Barred Antshrike (female).

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool.

As someone already pointed out on the blog that is the sole reason you switch on to the Internet in the morning, the Eurasian Red Squirrel is more arboreal and much more agile than the vast majority of its North American family members.

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. North American warblers, on the other hand, often bear names of, at best, marginal utility. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family.

But the grasslands of eastern Montana bear a resemblance to their wildlife that goes beyond the mere evolutionary imperative of camoflauge. The steeper slopes have some of the same vitality as the pronghorn (still present, though their numbers are down dramatically after a hard, snowy winter two years ago.)
