A flock of the ever-present Black-capped Chickadees netted be a hoped for Boreal Chickadee , smaller, browner, shyer and vacating its perch a fraction of a second before I could get a photo. As we headed down the trail, we were stopped from taking the long route by yellow tape and a sign warning of bears. What an incredible experience.

While people with dogs often experience the greatest health benefits, a pet doesn’t necessarily have to be a dog or a cat. Having an ever-present dog or cat, for example, can help ease separation anxiety in children when mom and dad aren’t around. Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax.

I didn’t know much about Birds of Paradise either before 2013, when I accompanied a non-birding friend to a presentation at a local college, not really expecting much. Also of use, as Gregory points out in the Introduction, is his experience with painting birds of iridescence, having painted a whole book on sunbirds!

That’s all fascinating from a historical and biogeographical perspective, but how much bearing should our understanding of the past have on our taxonomic treatment of populations in the present? And while we’re at it, what’s your experience with Mexican Ducks and Mallards in Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas?

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden.

It prompted a lot of questions, many of which I had previously answered by simple supposition and presumption, but which now became highlighted as inadequate in the light of this experience. I changed to a position further up the slope which allowed me to get a better angle on the top of the branch and bear out my supposition.
