Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds. Creatures have come in phases for me: the duck phase, the cat phase, the dog phase, the bear phase (I was living in Vermont--it was unavoidable), the Canada goose phase. There's never a shortage of creatures who need our help.

Just as the ranger was telling us that we might see wild cats – well, not wild cats, but rather, Wildcats , the wild version of the domestic cat, Felis silvestris lybica , one of those cats popped its head out of the brush about 50 feet beyond her. The most interesting thing about this cat was lack of kitty-cat-ness.

Now, he lay frightened and ruffled in my hands, his tail tattered, his feathers damp from the maw of a cat named Puck. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. Solomon Islanders say that the species was driven to extinction by cats and dogs introduced by Europeans. The bird’s skeleton bears similarities to New Guinea’s much smaller (!) The large, crested Choiseul Pigeon ( Microgoura meeki ) inhabited Choiseul and perhaps nearby islands in the Solomon Islands.

If you have extra dog shirts/sweaters around (or if you would like to buy new ones), send them to The Dog Project. They are collecting sweaters to help dogs in shelters keep warm in the winter months. If dogs have to be in a shelter, at least they will be more comfortable. Try making a toy yourself. Get creative!

Similarly, the property protects an impressive large mammal fauna; it contains globally significant populations of African elephant (Loxodontha africana) (106,300), black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) (2,135) and wild hunting dog (Lycaon pictus).
