As always, we held our sit high atop Battery Harris at Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. This vantage point is advantageous in that we can see the ocean, we can see the bay, and, when the winds are right, we can see migrants streaming through. Sadly, on Saturday the winds weren’t right. Wait until next year!

Fledgling House Sparrow Getting Fed

These particular birds were in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, but the same story is taking place all over the world right now, as few species have successfully adapted to as many locations as the House Sparrow.

We have found a spot that is right at the place where a very large arroyo meets up with the Sea of Cortez. In the same day, just a few meters up the arroyo, there is a plethora of desert species.

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. To reach Prespa Lakes, from Niki continue through Florina, from there right for Albania and veer right for the lakes. If heading to the Kerkini, two kilometres after the border take the left turn for Serres and drive until you spot the lake on you right hand side.

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. That, and 10 days back on the way was going to be a great to recharge the batteries after a long round-the-world trip. Right after a couple of quick photos, it was gone, off to more secluded locations.

A Brown Booby in Queens

And seeing as there were good northwest winds overnight, weather radar had shown lots of birds taking off, and the winds were expected to continue from the north through the morning, I decided that I would make my way to Fort Tilden at first light and install myself on the Battery Harris Platform. And this bird was way out over the water.
