This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Where could you go birding in Australia in 2023?

The reason for this particular camera is that I need a camera that takes AA batteries for when we are away from power for weeks on end and is not too large for travelling. There are Japanese made Eneloop Pro AA batteries that will last for over 1000 photos quite easily nowadays, so this is my ideal camera. Minyirr Park, Broome.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. While visiting the Kakadu National Park, I was able to photograph this Rainbow Bee eater right after it had caught a dragonfly. My favorite of the stay was this White-cheeked Bulbul.

The wonders of migration

They need to go north to breed and we will anxiously await the return of the adults and the juveniles later in the year. You have to have a lot of respect for all migratory birds when you imagine the lives they live and the incredible journeys they make to enable them to breed and to continue to survive in a changing world.
