Jumping out of my “Beat” today

In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. I am sure there is a regulation that requires any article that covers Alaska, must include a Bald Eagle , so here is mine. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. Common Redpoll.

Red-tailed Hawk Eating Breakfast

But what really caught my eye as I drove on the gravel road over the top of the capped landfill was a young Red-tailed Hawk feasting on what looked like a dead Gray Squirrel. It must be immensely frustrating to have food stuck on your beak when you lack hands to get it off. Other hawks are the worst! Finally, take small bites.

Week 29: The birds of Crater Lake National Park

In the Circle of Life” category, this Bald Eagle had managed to catch a small squirrel, and was passing over the water. Looking out over the lake from one of the many view points as you travel the park, we spotted Peregrines Falcons, American Kestrels, and this young Coopers Hawk , as it flew right over our heads.

Those are places rich with the birds that made Montana great — American Dippers , Bohemian Waxwings , Pygmy Nuthatches , Bald Eagles on flyby, and so on and so on. It has squirrels, and House Sparrows , and the American Robins on the lawn, but a Pileated Woodpecker? A woodpecker.

Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

As we headed back outside and picked out the quail and American Tree and Song Sparrows around the parking lot area, I discovered a new, mammalian focus of my interest — the Columbian ground squirrel, a charismatic little rodent with white eyeliner, a red nose, and a surprising degree of self-confidence for prey.
