I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Here is a male Lesser Goldfinch taking his turn. Fun birding!

The upside for me, not to take away from my day with 27 different bears, was the next 6 days all by myself on Kodiak Island, recording as many new bird species as I could find. Gold-crowned Sparrows were found around many of the salmon filled streams. Savanah Sparrow. Aleutian Song Sparrow. Gold-crowned Sparrow.

While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. It looks nice 2.

Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year. Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, and a fair number of Bald Eagles all can be found on the refuge year round. Here are a few scenics from my last few days on the refuge.

We started early, walking the trails through weedy fields and reveling in the sheer number of sparrows (I saw nine species), Pine Siskins (everywhere), kinglets, Palm Warblers , and Yellow-rumped Warblers. The habitat was great and the birds were abundant which is a great recipe for a fun morning.

Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese. At one point, standing in the middle of one of the first dikes, I was able to spot 17 Bald Eagles , a Peregrine Falcon , two American Kestrels , and Northern Harrier.
