A solitary Chestnut-breasted Mannikin

At this time of year around the north of Australia the ephemeral lakes are drying out fast. The main bird species visiting were Rufous-throated Honeyeaters , Zebra Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch. As I have mentioned in the past we often place branches out for birds.

A good year for Zebra Finch

This year has been different as we have a new visitor-the Zebra Finch. The last time we saw Zebra Finch visit our garden was a pair in 2004 and then suddenly in April this year they appeared in large numbers all around Broome’s coastline and at the Poo Ponds. I went out to sit on the lawn and take some photographs.

This track will lead you to the Halls Creek Poo Ponds and these are by far the best Poo Ponds in the north of Western Australia! Trips Australia' We visited Palm Springs, California towards the end of 1989 and we camped and looked for birds.

Langi Crossing after the floods of January 2023

Following the devastating floods, causing significant damage to the highways across the north of Australia in December 2022 and January 2023, we knew it would be several months before we could return to the banks of the Fitzroy River at Langi Crossing. One Whistling Kite nest had five Zebra Finch nests in the underside of the big nest.
