Varied Sittellas at Langi Crossing

10,000 Birds

Examples are the fairywren species and the Varied Sittella. They are only 10-11cm long, so one of the smallest birds in Australia and if you are suffering from presbycusis you will be relying on your eyesight for any little bit of movement. I always seem to hear some of the smaller shriller sounding birds, which Grant does not.

Pink-eared Ducks-a favourite duck

10,000 Birds

For obvious reasons it has listed under “other names” in field guides “Zebra Duck” and it is easily identified from all other duck species in Australia by its distinct stripes. The list was going to suffer due to the rain and the dispersal of so many of the bird species that we saw only three days earlier.

We seem to live in an age of splitting, only last week it was announced that another 460 odd species have been split. An armchair split, no less.

For one, they are remarkably diverse with a little over 380 species spread over every continent except Europe (only introduced) and Antarctica. Brazil, in particular, is the country with the largest number of parrot species in the world with approximately 84 species. What other secrets does the Amazon still hold? Most do not.

How to Confront Cruelty

Critter News

Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? The norm of moderate concern for animals - that animals matter albeit less than humans - permits the (ab)use of animals in vivisection, factory farming, bloodsports and other contexts where animals suffer. Sounds interesting.

Birding Chongming Island in summer

10,000 Birds

I do not get too many comments on my blog posts, but it seems that whenever I write about jacanas – whether in Africa, Australia, or Asia – there is an unusually high number of reactions (well, maybe one or two rather than the usual zero) from female readers. This is ok as birds do not have teeth anyway).
