According to Wikipedia, the national bird of Australia is the Emu – which I have not seen yet. On the other hand, some websites state that the Laughing Kookaburra is Australia’s national symbol. I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter.

A variety of bird species appeared to have bred in recent weeks. Clouds are a rare sight during the winter in the north of Australia! The Red-winged Parrots were quite well camouflaged in the trees as were the Black-chinned Honeyeaters. Red-winged Parrot. Two young Black-necked Storks in a nest. Black-faced Woodswallows.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

Several bird species just flew across the river or along the river and were duly recorded. Red-collared Lorikeets , Red-winged Parrots , Galahs , Red-tailed Black Cockatoos , Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Australian Bustards , Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Torresian Crows , Crested Pigeons and Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes were in the area.

The mountains are named after ancient Bunya Pines Araucaria bidwillii , a common species [pictured above] within the forests and one that dominates the skyline from the main accommodation area. By the forest edge another macropod species appears, the less common Black striped Wallaby [below]. Followed by a few King Parrots.

The city of Salisbury, Australia describes them as “the most naturally inquisitive, intelligent, playful, (and destructive!) In the southwestern of Western Australia (not where these photos were taken), the Little Corella actually is an introduced bird species listed as a category 3 declared pest ( source ).

We were very pleased to find 82 of the bird species in the town area and then travelled out of town to the last remaining water at an ephemeral lake close to the highway to achieve 110 by the end of the day. There are some excellent “breakaway country” locations in the Goldfields area of Western Australia and one fine example is near Leonora. Their colour can vary from very dark brown to very pale brown and the specimen at The Terraces was one of the paler of the species. Bourke’s Parrot. Brown Falcon.

As a guide he was great, we never saw the fairy-wrens (we did hear them), but he found a bunch of species I had not yet seen on the trip, including the Superb Fruit-dove , a Cicadabird (actually a type of cuckoo-shrike) and my personal favourite, a Yellow Boatbill. I saw them in Kingfisher as well, but only got a photo here.

More importantly the airport in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) on the main island of Viti Levu is a major air hub and frequent stop on flights between the United States and Australia or New Zealand. The species replaces the common Wattled Honeyeater that can be found across the rest of Fiji’s islands, as well as the rest of Polynesia.
