It was clearly a Cattle Egret , due to the orange feathers, but it is June! Cattle Egret should not be in breeding plumage in June in the north of Australia! Cattle Egret have been recorded in Australia since 1948. They are usually observed in flocks around cattle, but this one was alone.

They are widespread throughout Australia , but it does not mean you necessarily easily observe them. We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. Adult breeding plumage in Yellow-billed Spoonbills.

I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan.

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. As we all well know there is something very different about 2020.

Whiskered Terns will breed in this area if the conditions are right. Attempting a photograph of the cattle beside the highway was pointless, because you only got photographs of locusts! It is hard to make it possible for you to appreciate the huge numbers of both Whiskered Terns and locusts that have been flying around in recent weeks.

With the first rains we get mass frog breeding events and the flooded land is covered in tadpoles. All the tracks onto the station property were underwater and all of the Brahman Cattle have moved to the highest ground that they can find. In fact it is not just the cattle, but all of the creatures have moved into bushes and trees.

I do not get too many comments on my blog posts, but it seems that whenever I write about jacanas – whether in Africa, Australia, or Asia – there is an unusually high number of reactions (well, maybe one or two rather than the usual zero) from female readers. This Cattle Egret has just read a paper stating that it would be 3.6
