It was clearly a Cattle Egret , due to the orange feathers, but it is June! Cattle Egret should not be in breeding plumage in June in the north of Australia! Cattle Egret have been recorded in Australia since 1948. They are usually observed in flocks around cattle, but this one was alone. Cattle Egret.

The Cattle Egret Expansion

I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan.

The egret family were represented by the Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and a lone Cattle Egret. Cattle Egret. Although we are unlikely to be able to move freely this year beyond Western Australia we are lucky that we have an excellent variety of bird species in the local area. There was also a Black-necked Stork.
