Yes, it’s the same species that so many North American birders have looked for around the San Pedro River (myself included) and like those Arizona birds, our urban Gray Hawks likewise use riparian zones.

This year, I was able to photograph the ultra rare Rufous-capped Warbler , high in the snowy mountains of southern Arizona. This bird is 3 inches long, lives in the darkest part of the jungle understory of Costa Rica, and never sits still! We spent a total of 22 days in Costa Rica, with 15 of those days spent truly birding.

The Black-and-white Phainoptila , Phainoptila melanoxantha from Costa Rica and Panama. Then there is the Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher , Ptilogonys caudatus , living in some of the high mountains of Costa Rica and Panama. The females are a dark, slate colored gray, with much more obvious white edges on the wing feathers.

We also observed the beautifully patterned Prevost’s Ground-Sparrow , a sparrow very different from the ones that go by the same name in Costa Rica. Along the highway journey, the habitat shifted radically from wet evergreen forest to dry pinelands reminiscent of parts of Arizona. Alas, our time here was over too soon.

Think Arizona meets Costa Rica with a Mexican twist. Otherwise, the birding here was strikingly similar to southeast Arizona: Mexican Chickadee , Brown Creeper , Painted Redstart , Yellow-eyed Junco , etc. There are many dusty side roads in this area, many of which offer productive birding.

I think it’s because it brings me back to my first big birding trip, to southeast Arizona, where we had tantalizing views of leaves rustling where the becards had nested but nested no more. Since that trip, I’ve seen Rose-throated Becard in Costa Rica, but not with the rosy throat. I never saw the bird.
