That did not stop a New Jersey animal shelter from publishing this rabble-rousing flyer on Facebook, all written in alarming red capital letters: PARK RANGERS AND VET OFFICES ARE PUTTING OUT WARNINGS. THESE ARE THE PETS THAT HAWKS CAN SWOOP DOWN AND GRAB.

I have been thinking about this for awhile after I saw some people online with things like a pet skunk and even someone with a barn owl. I have always held the belief that most animals should be in the wild because that’s their natural habitat and they can get the stimulation and environment they need.

In Oregon, the Barred Owl is taking over Northern Spotted Owl territory and threatening that smaller bird’s survival. On the other hand, the extinction of the Spotted Owl is completely unacceptable. Why does this little Screech Owl look so horrified? Somehow they manage to get the bird or animal to a rehabilitator, even though finding one is often a feat in itself. For one – and we’ll stick with this one issue for now – because sometimes the public decides to keep the animal they have found, just for a little while.
