Towhees are large, ground-hugging sparrows that occur only in North America. Down here in central Mexico, the Canyon Towhee is a constant presence in open areas, including in my garden and around our church. Earlier this month, I came across a family of Spotted Towhees (Olive-backed) with a couple of other strange aspects.

One such star avian family is the Setophagidae, the birds known as wood-warblers. In Costa Rica, those would be the wood-warblers that do a lot more wintering in the southern USA and the Caribbean than in southern Central America. This elegant bird is part of a small family, unrelated to other birds called “flycatchers”, but including the Phainopepla of the American southwest.
