With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. There seems to be a parrot for almost any ecological situation. I am a self-proclaimed psittacophile.

Birding the Garden City of Georgetown

These birds had much smaller bills and were clearly a different species: Rusty-margined Flycatcher I couldn’t even think of going birding anywhere in South America and not see a Roadside Hawk. Further afield, amidst crowds of raucous Orange-winged Parrots was a pair of Mealy Parrots.

But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. I saw it described somewhere as a parrot’s bill stuck to a hawk’s body. Most years, there are no more than a few dozen reports of this species across the region.

Bird Migration and Conservation Meet at Selva Bananito, Costa Rica

Birds begin to filter down through this southern part of Central America by August but the biggest avian movement happens during the third and final weeks of October. We might not get the variety of a New Jersey autumn but we do get major numbers of species that winter in South America. In Costa Rica, October is our May.
