It took several days in Florida for the idea that I was pretty much surrounded by giant reptiles that could kill me to sink in to my brain. I am, of course, referring to Alligator mississippiensis , more commonly known as the American Alligator , or, colloquially, as gators. Though alligator attacks are rare they do happen.

Anhinga sat on exposed logs, near slowly swimming alligators. The post Into the Florida Woods for the Holiday Weekend appeared first on 10,000 Birds. I kept my ears perked up to catch errant song in the distance, but as soon as we approached they fell silent. The path may have been fun to follow, but full of birds it was not.

I'm fishing a lot, and recently I was sitting half inside the water thinking to myself that ppl in Florida can't just do that. Rivers,Swamps,Lakes) I still have no idea why there couldn't be alligators in our water? They got giagantic reptiles in the same kinda water.

The birding in Florida is so easy that a kid can do it. There are Double-crested Comorants , of course, but it’s not Florida unless you have Anhingas bellied up to the shoreline drying their wings like absurdly proportioned chickens. What sets Florida apart, besides the diversity, is the proximity.

It turns out that there is an example of this with wading birds in the Florida Everglades. Previous research has shown that wading bird nesting colonies could provide substantial food for alligators in the form of dropped chicks. Morphometric body condition for colony and non-colony alligators.
