Bufflehead are black and white ducks, the male sporting a large white patch on an otherwise black head. They breed in Canada and Alaska, but in the summer they can be found across the United States, as far south as Florida, Cuba, and into Mexico, and as far north as the Pacific coast of Alaska and the Atlantic coast of Maine.

In North America, the Greater White-fronted Goose breeds in open tundra areas of the low Arctic from Point Barrow, Alaska to northeastern Keewatin, Northwest Territories, and it winters south to Chiapas, Mexico, thus having the broadest latitudinal range of any arctic-nesting goose 1. I was not disappointed! Great birding!

There are quite a few records from Alaska, mostly in fall, and a scattering of records on the east coast, mainly in spring. The little tiny duck with the white supercilium was ours! Anthony had spotted the bird back in the reeds and announced it only to see a Wood Duck swim out. But I included a Wood Duck for scale!

There was a bounty on them in Alaska from 1917 until 1952—up to $2 a head! In my home state, Bald Eagles are breeding in 35 Ohio counties. Buried in the text at that link is the proposal to hunt Kentucky Sandhill Cranes, along with a bunch of duck hunting stuff. Now they’re off the red list and bouncing back into the black.

Well-represented exotic families include starlings, ducks and doves and there are also many more individual species that now thrive here. Some uncountable species, like Mitred Parakeets , are in fact way more numerous than some of the countable species and they are clearly breeding in well-established populations.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. They reach breeding maturity at four to seven years of age, produce only one chick per nesting season, and only one in three offspring survive to fledging age. You don’t even have to have a duck stamp! Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.
