Birding (and drinking mezcal) in Oaxaca, Mexico

Our local friend was already busy and everyone that had been suggested had to be flown in from either nearby Huatulco or Mexico City, which significantly added to the guiding fee. We hoped that a Lesser Roadrunner would show up…but alas it was not meant to be. This ended up being a bit more difficult than I imagined.

When is a Vulture Not a Vulture?

Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Occasionally I have been lucky enough to see Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures in tropical Mexico. Alas, although I was once a California boy, I have never seen a California Condor.

Alas, this little lovely perched on a wire just outside the window of the classroom where I was teaching at the moment, so no photos were taken. Two classic birds of Mexico’s east coast are also present.

Definitely NOT beep-beep

It is definitely not a “Road Runner” And it is definitely, certainly, absolutely not a Lesser Roadrunner , the roadrunner of choice for tropical Mexico and northern Central America. I have been lucky enough to see a few Greater Roadrunners in the Sonoran Desert, on both sides of the Mexico/U.S. Number 4 proves my point.

But, alas, the Novel Coronavirus did not respect my plans. So I am writing these words on Tuesday night in my home in Mexico, rather than waking up in Paris prior to flying to Istanbul. I was soooo excited about getting to know the Middle East, as well as some of its exotic species.

Alas, our rainy season seems to be slowing down — although I heard a rumble of thunder as I wrote the sentence — fingers crossed! These little Tyrant Flycatchers, present from Mexico through Colombia, never fail to charm, with their jaunty crests and characteristic “chewY-chewY!” ” calls. and Canada.

Third Time’s a Charm

And the town’s dry tropical heat means that you need to arrive early, which, along with Mexico eliminating Daylight Savings Time this year, means you must stumble out of bed at 5 am, and be on the road by 6. (An Alas, mine were sub-standard. I can’t say I was all that excited about making this third trip.
