It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. In three cases of adoption the common factor was that the adopting individual was sexually attracted to one of the real parents of the young.

And with no natural predators or resistant trees in their adopted territory, things have been looking pretty grim. If there is one silver lining to all of this gloomy news, it’s that the efforts of birders truly make a difference in helping to advance science. Nonetheless, this week will be chock full of invasive species.

This leaves Shanghai in June with basically just the year-round species and the summer breeders, maybe with a few added ultra-lazy individuals of migratory species. Fortunately, there are a few more such breeding species than most Shanghainese are aware of. Such as the Black-winged Cuckooshrike.

And so, most had been neutered, adopted out to soft-hearted landowners as odd pets, conversation pieces. Also, they were infested by a species of ear mite unknown to science.
