It’s sometimes said that these long, dark feathers resemble the tails of a Victorian doctor’s knee-length frockcoat, with the bird’s black cap – which it can raise into a crest – completing the old-fashioned medical look as a top hat of sorts. The palate is rich and oily, with caramel and coconut, culminating in a surprisingly dry finish.

Whilst observing the Southern Emu-wrens a White-fronted Chat flew into view and landed on some raised vegetation! All the best to you and your family for good health and good birding in 2020! It was a beautiful male bird and we then realised there were female birds on the other side of the wide trail that he was communicating with.

But it wasn’t four months ago, it was mid-June, 2020, mid-COVID-19 pandemic. Piney Z Lake is separated by Lake Lafayette by another raised berm – this time with no openings for paddlers. Large, yellow lily-pads floated on the surface of the water, and we felt like we had suddenly slipped inside a Monet painting.
