Clare M’s 2015 Year List

10,000 Birds

Of course I then had to continue and so once again in 2013 I joined others in listing for the year and have just completed the third year in 2014. The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July.

Predicting My Next Ten Queens Birds

10,000 Birds

Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. What did I predict back in December of 2013? Long-eared Owl, 3 Jul 2010, 25 Mar 2013. Long-eared Owl, 31 Oct 2010, 15 May 2012, 25 Mar 2013. Good times!

Clusters of four counties, each home to a handful of birders, competing in 2015 to see who can produce the biggest team list. Well, that’s yet to be determined, but bragging rights would appear to be a significant motivator. Orange is the Triad, Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point, my new home as of the summer of 2013.

A Grey-tailed Tattler flagged In Taiwan returns annually

10,000 Birds

I suddenly observed a Grey-tailed Tattler wearing a metal band on its right tibia and a plain white flag and a blue engraved leg flag on the left tibia. We were away in March 2015, so we don’t know how long it remained on that beach, but we observed it once again on 17th October 2015 and it continues to roost and feed in that area.

The Ross Sea – the Last Intact Marine Ecosystem on Earth – and I

10,000 Birds

Right: Robert McCormick, by Stephen Pearce. Unlike Darwin, who was a self-funded gentleman naturalist on board, McCormick was bound to the Beagle by his duties and was furious that a civilian passenger on board had usurped his rightful position as ship’s naturalist. What Will My Next Ten Birds in Queens Be?

10,000 Birds

Long-eared Owl – 25 Mar 2013 – This was another twitch which I managed to get on a drizzly morning before work where it roosted in a pine stand in Forest Park. Upland Sandpiper – 23 Jun 2013 – Found by Isaac Grant at the Edgemere Landfill in the midst of Isaac’s New York City big year. (It
