In June 2012, I had the great fortune to visit Trinidad and Tobago in a group that included birder and artist Matthew Dodder. Matthew began birding (and drawing birds) as a boy in Boston, during the Great Blizzard of 1977. Enter John Muir Laws. There is something quite natural about wanting to do this.

Birdwatcher or Bird Photographer?

Though it’s more than 50 years since my first bird photograph was published, I’ve always remained a birdwatcher who photographs birds, not a photographer whose favourite quarry has feathers. However, 400mm wasn’t really long enough for bird photography, so I eventually bought myself a secondhand Nikon 600mm f5.6

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of November 2012)

Of the birds I encountered this weekend, the one I was most excited about was the Rough-legged Hawk that claims territory near my mother-in-law’s home some winters. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a Barred Owl in Central Park, the only remaining one from the three that were discovered about a week ago.
