This year was my third year helping to lead trips at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. Though Whooping Cranes have recovered greatly since their nadir of 23 total Whooping Cranes in 1941 as of 2011 there were only about 600.

Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself. She deserved her freedom. She deserved to retire in comfort and luxury. She was flying well, and caught her own food easily. A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found.

The USFWS designated the whooping cranes in this population “nonessential and experimental.” Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011.
