Sure, I didn’t leave the United States but my first trip to the Pacific Northwest allowed me to see lots of new birds and spending the beginning of the year in southern California didn’t hurt the ol’ year list either. The Tufted Puffins at Protection Island in Washington State. What did I see?

Birding Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge

Together with Cedar Point and West Sister Island, which are both managed by the staff at Ottaway, a total of over 9,000 acres of prime habitat on the south shore of Lake Erie are protected. While at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium I made two visits to the refuge, once at dawn and once early in the afternoon.
