What began as a regional event in Los Angeles in 2011 has expanded to include a series of local Pack Walks around the country between September 24 – 30, led by North Shore Animal League America national shelter partners and Mutt-i-grees Curriculum schools. I know humans as a whole are a powerful species, but really, we do not have that much control over hummingbird migration ( Trumpeter Swans , maybe, but not hummingbirds). Feeders are being distributed through Farmer’s Markets and birding events from July 29 to September 24, 2011 within the region.

The little three-legged cat and Nancy connected, despite the oceans and differences between them, in an unlikely turn of events. Cathy discovered that speaking through Henry, in his voice, gave her a freedom of expression she did not have in her standard therapeutic role, and Henry’s voice became the easiest way to reach and teach humans.

All of them were on the route of the Triathlon Hawks, our Swarovski Optik-sponsored team competing in the Carbon Footprint category of the 2011 World Series of Birding. Next we stopped by The Beanery where an extremely distant singing Veery at the limits of the human ear was the only new bird to grace our list.

The good news is that Kirtland’s Warbler numbers are up, 1,828 singing males counted in the 2011 census. I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s.
