My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. For the past several years I have been taking advantage of our many National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) here in Northern California.

There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. Yes, they have been an endangered species for as long as most of us can recall, but remember, they were traditionally a hunted species. Hunting eagles will not hurt, but enhance non-consumptive wildlife viewing opportunitites.

Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. a tropical delight! What a sight. the marvelous birds that await.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

Our last visit to Herdsman Lake was in winter in June 2011 and last Sunday was a beautiful hot summer day and most people appeared to be inside as we spent several hours circumnavigating the lake system. Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.
