I tried using the Internet, but found it frustrating for all the usual reasons; websites either didn’t include all species or were difficult to use for identification. Each species account is 2-pages long, one page of text and one page of photographs.

They need to go north to breed and we will anxiously await the return of the adults and the juveniles later in the year. Ideally a photograph is the best way to document your observation, but it is not necessary if you make clear notes on the positioning of the metal band and the flags. This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. Because this was such a common species, we lacked quantitative data to be certain that this lack was an actual “situation” and not just the ordinary seasonal variation.

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list.

I knew I would not be seeing the bird in its rosy-breasted breeding plumage, but somehow seeing the bird in all its forms helped crystallize its appearance in my head. The first book in the series, The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds , exploded onto the birding scene in 2011. I studied it. Sadly, I still did not see the bird.

As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck.
