Fledgling House Sparrow Getting Fed

A couple of weeks ago I watched and photographed a young House Sparrow getting fed by its mother. I also watched, but failed to get pictures of, the same young bird being fed by two different male House Sparrows. Sparrows Coming and Going

Sparrows, on the other hand, seem to make the most of the lamb-like weather left over from the end of March and make their move northward while wistful, wood-warbler-wishing birders have seen few of their quarry. In the New York City area the number and variety of sparrows a birder can see in mid-April is astounding.

A New Bird (for Me) in Queens

After all, I have lived in Queens since 2008 without any luck finding one here so why should 16 February be any different? Though the amount of species we saw on our walk out made it seem more like a polar expedition with only a few Yellow-rumped Warblers and pair of Song Sparrows showing themselves on the long walk.

Seaside Sparrows were singing on both sides and occasionally popped up to give us a view before diving deep back into the Spartina grass, hopefully getting ready to nest. Seaside Sparrow.
