Ruppy and four other beagles are the first dogs to glow, though the experiment has taken place in other animals. Lee was also part of a team that created the first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005. The team of scientists are hopeful that the creation of fluorescent puppies will help aid further research in human diseases.

Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. We spent the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005 getting fired by vet after vet. So I went through bag by bag of everything at our small pet health food store until I found the perfect combination of dead animals and their parts.

My animal rescue-life has had many phases. From 2002-2005 I was heavily ensconced in a bird and waterfowl phase with sometimes daily drama of the life-and-death variety that led to my unintentional education about all things duck (Muscovies, in particular). In other words, I may as well have doused him in gasoline and set fire to him.
