5 new species in the first hour, with a Olive-backed Sunbird, Helmeted Friarbird , a Varied Triller, White-breasted Cuckoo-shrike and the Australasian Figbird, and we hadn’t even got out of the park yet! At the end of the day, 38 species were found, of which 19 species were new to the year list as well as lifers!

I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). Sidney Dunkle’s Dragonflies Through Binoculars , published in 2000, covers only dragonflies, not damselflies.) Many species are dimorphic, with females looking different from males.

For birders, the Wolongshan area is like a poorer cousin of Balangshan – due to the lower elevation, the bird species here are more common and thus less interesting. Some Chinese Babax waste part of their lives feeding chicks of Large Hawk Cuckoos, which parasitize the babax species.

Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. All these people were legends – I barely scraped past 2000 in half a century. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. She died in a car accident during a birding trip. None were found. It’s just the warm-up.

Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses have a new home, and a life of luxury at the ARK 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County. The ADI rescue operation was backed by Bob Barker. ADI also rescues animals in distress worldwide.
