People are often surprised that large predators kills smaller species but its actually a common phenomenon and I have previously seen a Leopard carrying a dead African Wild Cat at Punda Maria in Kruger National Park and Lions killing a Black-backed Jackal in Namibia’s Etosha National Park.

But as the re-introduced population around the Great Lakes begins to pick up steam, it’s a species that has been discovered more regularly in North Carolina, and has been annual the last three years. The next day I came upon two swans right where they were supposed to be. But that didn’t happen as you can see form my photo.

We birders don’t always like to ruminate on missed birds, for some of us the wounds are worn too close to the surface. For starters, Costa’s is a desert species and we were primarily up in the mountains. Things looked right. But then the bird turned, and things didn’t look quite right. Target nailed.

In her free time she travels near and far to find birds to continue building her life list, though many of her favorites can still be found right in her own backyard. As we looked closer, we saw the Sooty Terns nesting right on the ground itself, calling back and forth to each other as they sat on their speckled eggs.

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. Either that or having family friends in Germany. A quick sidetrack.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. The dog tracks did not lead to any birds, but the wounded snake had a Brahminy Kite on it until I came along on my bike and took a photo. Wicked, right?

Security is taken very seriously in the aviation business and discretion is better than having to explain yourself to tightly wound security personnel. Many of the common species can be seen here, probably in this order; White-eared Bulbul , Red-vented Bulbul , Eurasian Hoopoe , Purple Sunbird , Graceful Prinia , Indian Roller.

What we do to animals shows how we feel about other species. if they see a mistreated dog, and shudder to see a wounded deer in the road. Indeed, we have not come far from Upton Sinclair’s “ Jungle.” If we must eat conscious beings, we must show them respect. Bertha Rogers Delhi, N.Y., I think most would, enthusiastically.

The Great Black Hawk – a species with a native range in Mexico to South America – had been spotted in this park for weeks, but not every day.
