Most arguments for conserving a species focus on things that we can measure in dollar amounts, such as ecotourism, medical benefits, etc. Snowy Owls have value. However, there is too much focus on “likes.”

One flock on Cable Beach consisted of a nice mix of species that included Great Knot, Red Knot, Terek Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint and Greater and Lesser Sand Plover. This Olive Sea Snake was a very fat specimen and had a wound which didn’t look particularly fatal.

People are often surprised that large predators kills smaller species but its actually a common phenomenon and I have previously seen a Leopard carrying a dead African Wild Cat at Punda Maria in Kruger National Park and Lions killing a Black-backed Jackal in Namibia’s Etosha National Park.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. The dog tracks did not lead to any birds, but the wounded snake had a Brahminy Kite on it until I came along on my bike and took a photo. I hope you enjoy these photos!

The big lizard had no visible wounds, so it's safe to say it died of natural causes, but then why were its eyes bloodshot? Sitting on the ground were 3 brown lizards.

There are some very large crocodiles in the gorge despite them only being the smaller species of crocodile-namely “freshies” rather than “salties” Freshwater and Saltwater crocodiles can inhabit the same water systems, so you should never presume there is only one species present and either species can inflict wounds.
