Putting a baby bird back in its nest is not always the right thing to do. Even if you do not see an obvious wound, cat or dog saliva, which is full of nasty bacteria, can still get into a bird’s eyes/orifices and will eventually kill the bird; it will just die more slowly and painfully. Now, I resorted to taking him on long walks because if not, he is crying and losing his mind in the house and I figured if I walk him it's less damage than the zoomies he gets running around the house and jumping all over because he has too much energy. Luckily, she had no broken bones, but she did have a large open wound on her right wing. Unfortunately, in the meantime she broke the first six flight feathers on that right wing. Over the next months, it healed very well. She could fly, but was impaired. Now for the romance part of her story.

He came to OCFA totally flea infested and with a few open wounds. One wound (the one on his front right leg) was to the bone. Their shelter is full. Flex is a handsome, neutered male, red fawn greyhound (currently under 60 pounds). He has been vetted and is healing nicely.

There is a small wound on the lower beak, which is not significant, but will be cleaned and treated. The main concern remains fro stbite to both feet, with the right foot worse than the left. Preliminary bloodwork indicates mild debilitation, with further bloodwork pending. No fractures were seen on radiographs.

One of the rangers at the refuge had some photos showing an injury on the bird’s breast, likely from a gunshot wound as the refuge is a popular site for waterfowl hunting, including hunting the thousands of Tundra Swans in the area. The next day I came upon two swans right where they were supposed to be. I guess so.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.
