The views were filled with scrubby, low vegetation, dramatic mountains, sheep herds, and sheep herders. We traveled maybe ten miles on the only road before turning back around. Birding was tougher.

Birding Dulan County, Qinghai

But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. Blue Sheep. According to the HBW, based on strong morphological, ecological, and genetic differences, this is likely to be a distinct species altogether.

Moments later it came barreling down the cliff in a chase, scattering a herd of Blue Sheep in all directions, however it didn’t seem to reach striking distance of any of them. However, we were somewhat encouraged by spotting at least 10 herds of Blue Sheep (locally known as Bharal) on the slopes around this lower valley.

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). It sounds like a sheep , something even I can remember.

One where you get to enjoy the many different local desert birds, right along side the birds that make the warm salt waters they home. In addition to the hundred or so species of birds I regularly find here, there are Desert Foxes, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Desert Bighorn Sheep and Mule Deer.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. In 1954, with stringent controls on the grazing of domestic animals, a herd of 20 Desert Bighorn Sheep were re-introduced and have flourished. This small group of Pronghorn Antelope were right at the refuge entrance.

Today, with assistance from the Tucson Audubon Society, this world-famous destination is “The Place” to go for not only rare hummingbirds, but dozens of other species as well. A Blue-throated Hummingbird just flew right past us, and over to one of the feeders. That is our 5th wheel on the right corner. 1 Gila Woodpecker.
