The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. It is dominated by Burmese Teak , interspersed by thickets of Calcutta Bamboo.

Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established.

I think every naturalist in the United States knows the outlines of this urban tale: The pristine marshes of New Jersey are poisoned by pollution, toxic waste, pig farms, and probably every single way in which human beings can destroy the environment. There are, at least 2 species, thank goodness. Bats eat mosquitos.)

Anyone considering a visit to Panti Forest should be enticed by the five different species that might be seen there. Plus, I saw awesome bats, bugs, butterflies, herps, pitcher plants, and four of the five possible monkey species: Dusky Leaf Monkey , Banded Leaf Monkey , Southern Pig-tailed Macaque , and Long-tailed Macaque.
