This bit of trivia was given in an article in my local bird club’s monthly newsletter about the ongoing breeding bird atlas in New York State. Besides, now that we’re over a week into autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, my birding thoughts have turned from breeding bird atlasing to the peak of fall migration.

These breeding colonies included other species of flamingos, but it was only the Andean Flamingo that appeared to have been the most affected, if indeed the egg extraction was one of the causes that led to the Andean Flamingo’s population decline. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

The fisherman who rescues a merganser tangled in line, pierced with fishhooks, and brings it to a rehabber may write something in his next angler’s newsletter. Sometimes it is a member of an endangered or threatened species. A single life does matter. My heart sings. On the other hand, I could simply write a check.

This year’s total of waterbirds species nesting on the islands wetlands was 18 with one species of grebe, four species of herons, one ibis, five species of ducks, two species of gallinules, five species of waders and one species of Tern. The wading species also had a successful year.

… leaving the remainder of the birds on the Cyprus Species List (over 380 species) are either migrants or accidentals. the first three found only in the Troodos and Paphos forests). That’s quite a lot! As it happens though, Blackcaps may provide a modern example of how this can occur.

In that world, a mimeographed newsletter was a giant leap forward. It’s Macaulay Library contains a wealth of photos and audio recordings for approximately 10,000 species. Several field guides have related apps, including Sibley , and many of those apps feature audio recordings for each species.
